Return: Over-the-top vs through the overflow

Which way is better? I am in the planning stages of my 40 gal br and will be drilling for the overflow. I plan on using a 400-600 gph return pump. I will have maxi-streams and possibly a surge for in-tank flow.

I was planning on going over-the-top.
Is one way better than the other?

If you are successful drilling the 1st hole drill a return hole--now that you are an expert. Remember to put a siphon break hole in the return line to prevent a sump overflow. R
