Fishless cycle
Hi I am currently in the process of trying to cycle my new tank. I have had in my tank for about a week 3 prawns from the supermarket. How long would you expect it to take for some ammonia to be present as currently I still have 0 and I would have thought they would have started to rot. By now?

Depending on the size of your tank, I'd expect an ammonia reading. Agreed, time for a new test kit.

I'd have expected ammonia also and also vote for checking with a different tes tkit. However, depending on any bacteria, live sand or live rock added you may not see much or any cycle.

I don’t have any live rock this time around and the tank is bare bottom so there should 100% be an ammonia spike as everything is brand new

I did live rock in a tank I had a few years ago I had a mantis shrimp and more rock crabs than I can remember so I went with the dry rock this time and the longer cycle ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I just got back into the hobby, my 32 gallon has been cycling for 2.5 months, I'm still in the nitrite spike. I myself used the ammonia drops method. I have base rock and base sand, so its been pretty long time cycling.
Good luck on your new tank!
