Looking to buy a nano tank

Im looking for a tank between 8-40 gal to start my first reef tank, maybe a cube, I don't know. My price range is around $200. My brother has a saltwater aquarium so i do have some knowledge but does anyone have some good input on what tank a beginner should buy. I only want to put a couple corals in the tank, an anemone, frogspawn.. maybe some hammer coral and other things I will later find. What tank should I buy.

is your price range $200 for all equipment or just the tank? are you limited in space for your tank?

A little tough to answer as the possibilities are pretty wide. In that price range for tank and equip, even basic, you might want to go with a regular tank, maybe a 10 gal. A lot of stores have 10 gal starter kits that usually include the heater, net, food, tank, cover and filter and anywhere from 80-140.00 (at least in my area). If you are going reef or even just a fish only saltwater, you need to upgrade your filter and plan for a better light system...at least a double bulb hood or lightstrip.

If you are looking at the all-in-one tanks, the price tends to go up a bit and usually you are only getting the tank and lighting (with bulbs).

You're best bet is to first hit the online stores...ThatPetPlace, Drs Foster and Smith, Marine Depot and so on...get a feel for cost (remember shipping cost). Then, once you have that information, go into as many local shops as you can and compare things there. Sometimes the added sales tax for buying local will be more than the cost of shipping from the online places.

There is also your local newspaper for people selling used systems, eBay, Craig's List.....

Basically, there is no easy answer..you have to do some research.

if space is no concern, than i would run a tank/ sump combo. that way yo have more water volume and your water parameters wont fluctuate as much as they would in a smaller tank. i personally have an AIO( all in one tank) and love that all the equipment is contained in your tank. i also have a mr.aqua 33 gal waiting to be setup, just need a few more parts.

depending on your location you should check the for sale forum on RC, you might be able to find a nice package deal for $200(tank/stand/light). the seller might also cut you a deal on other misc equipment since you bought their tank setup.

happy researching

You might also check if there is a reef club in your area. A lot of times members will be upgrading and you can find some great deals.
