ants are eating the salt on my tank lid.

They're attracted to it and can prefer it as much as sugar. As a food source, they'll keep coming back and it will get worse. I'd wipe it down consistently and spread some of the various repellents along the chemical trail they lay to find it. Believe it or not, cayenne pepper powder drives them away.
